How Social Media and Internet links to Hate Speech, Cyber Bullying, and Defiance/Cybercrime in Youth

Research essay from KSU master’s class on cyber law

“Over the past 20 years or so there has been an increase in technological advancements and more people gaining access to the internet. While these advancements have been helpful in the everyday functions of life, they also bring with them some negative effects (Brady et al., 2015). One of the most vulnerable groups to fall victim to the negative effects of technology and social media are the youth but more specifically the teenagers in middle and high school. In the following essay, there has been research done to explain the societal impacts of cybercrime/deviance on teens, online hate speech and its effect on youth, and finally social media addiction and its link to cyber bullying of teenagers.”

The above paragraph that you have just read is the introduction to one of the research essays I wrote during my cyber law course. It covers the impacts of technology on the youth such as cyber bullying and cyber exploitation of children. A major source of these actions come from the youth and teens use of social media. With the ever evolving and growing mass of social media sites, these impacts on youth will only continue to grow.

Another major drawback to teens and youth being on social media is cyber-bullying. Cyber bullying is huge and needs to be taken seriously by all parents and teachers involved. To students who struggle with this, it is all too real, even if the bullying is done online and not in person. In many worst-case scenarios, this leads to the students doing self-harm or even taking their life.

As a cyber professional, it is our duty to educate and make parents, teachers, counselors, etc. aware of cyber bullying, cyber exploitation of children and other risks of youth online. Please read my article that is attached to this post for more information on the topics I just touched on and what we can do about them starting today.
